Headway A City Tries to Measure the Violence It’s Preventing In Baton Rouge, a public safety experiment could help to answer a critical question: Do community efforts to reduce street violence work? Like Ms. Robinson, Ms. Tate-Alexander, 48, raised her family in Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge became the first city outside New Jersey to be tutored in the Newark method. Calming the urge to retaliateBy June 2021, when Ms. Tate-Alexander started assembling the street team, Ms. Robinson joined up. At first, Ms. Robinson and Ms. Tate-Alexander seemed wary when I asked about him.

CNN —Donald Trump made an unexpected declaration Tuesday when probed about a six-week abortion ban that will soon take effect in his home state of Florida. “We’ll be making a statement next week on abortion,” the former president told reporters in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Other close advisers, however, have expressed concern that Trump will give further ammunition to Democrats by supporting any new restrictions on abortion. “It was bound to happen at some point where he needed to clarify his position,” a Trump adviser told CNN. Ron DeSantis was courting the state’s evangelical community by running to Trump’s right on the issue.

When Presidents Talk to Ghosts

But in the high-profile federal inquiries into President Biden and former President Donald Trump over their handling of classified documents, the writers who were supposed to evade the spotlight found themselves in the public glare. In 2017, Biden read to his own ghostwriter from notebooks he had in his home, which contained classified materials. Trump was ultimately charged with federal crimes, while Biden was not. The documents Trump shared were intended to rebut an account about his last days in office — and they were shared not with his own ghostwriter, but someone else’s. More broadly, they are about the impulse of powerful figures to burnish their legacies, and to tell their stories on their own terms.

Business Insider spoke with two former Home Depot employees, Janet Federico and Matthew De Fiebre, about things they wish customers would stop doing in the big-box store. De Fiebre, who worked as a garden and order-fulfillment associate in 2019 and 2020, said showing employees grace goes a long way. There are lots of different departments in each Home Depot store. "I can't eyeball measurements from a photo, and holding up your hands and saying, 'about this wide' is not helpful," Federico told BI.

Rebecca Yarros confirmed Violet Sorrengail has a second signet power in the "Empyrean" series. After the book's release, Yarros said Violet's second signet had already manifested in "Iron Flame." Violet's second signet power could be many things, but fans have a few ideasThere are multiple popular theories on what Violet's signet may be, but the three most popular theories are distance wielding, communicating with the dead, and amplifying other people's powers. Some readers also think Violet's second signet is an amplification of other people's signets, which would allow her to make the people around her more powerful. Only the third book will reveal what Violet's second signet is, though fans may be waiting for a while.

The back-to-back appearances Thursday from Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump – who both helped run the Trump Organization while their father was in the White House – comes ahead of the former president’s own testimony on Monday. Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump are co-defendants in the case, along with their father, the Trump Org., and several company executives. Eric Trump acknowledged he provided information to former Trump Org. But he tried to distinguish between specific statements of financial condition – his father’s personal financial statements at the heart of the civil case – and general financial records for the company. Some internal policies and methodologies “have been bolstered” since the investigation began, Trump Jr. said.

Elon Musk's X has struggled to contain false information about the Israel-Gaza conflict. Part of the issue is the spread of unverified videos and content that were first posted on Telegram. The fighting between Israel and Hamas isn't, of course, the first instance of a conflict to be followed via Telegram. Videos and details about an ongoing conflict often make their way to a platform like X from Telegram — and do so without their source being identified or verified. X users will share Telegram videos, often without context, to fit their narrative or suit some other ulterior motive.

Just three — Mike Dunleavy of Alaska, Jim Justice of West Virginia and Henry McMaster of South Carolina — have backed Mr. Trump. Two others — Ron DeSantis of Florida and Doug Burgum of North Dakota — are running against him. Some close to the former president said that was most likely rooted in superstition that such consideration would jeopardize his own nomination. Mr. Trump raised eyebrows among some associates with private, offhand comments that Mr. Scott had not received much coverage for his performance during the first Republican presidential debate. Mr. Scott has been mentioned as a potential vice-presidential pick even though he is currently running against Mr. Trump, who didn’t participate in his party’s first debate.

Audiobook of the Week: ‘The Ghost Club’

At the fore is Harry Price, who became chairman in 1938 after investigating paranormal activity at the Borley Rectory in Essex, which he called the “most haunted house in England.” Professing that scientific rigor could legitimize the study of the afterlife, Price debunked lore about a phantom nun on the grounds but claimed to have observed other ghostly goings-on, such as tapping on the windows and servant bells ringing after their wires had been cut. He drew both acclaim and criticism, leaving Dawson to wonder: “Who was Harry Price — a genius or a grifter? A conjurer or a con?”Dawson is less skeptical of the wider cultural appeal of spiritualism. Perhaps she’s right that war, industrialization and the Titanic’s sinking stirred metaphysical yearnings, but after listeners hear offhand mentions of club members’ commitments to colonialism and Christian Zionism — and if they have any outside knowledge of the occult origins of the Third Reich — listeners may wonder if there’s more to the story. But can the runaway success of “Barbie” reshape Hollywood? I’m too cynical to think studio executives will learn all the right lessons from it. Still, “Barbie” proved at least five things to be true, if decision makers are willing to think outside the pink box. But “The Bear” captures something real about the city’s dining culture — and, more broadly, what you might call the geography of ambition. This is the kind of chef we see Carmy transforming into, and the kind of chef we’re shown surrounding him. In another second-season scene, Sydney has a video chat with the pastry chef Marcus, who has gone to Copenhagen to hone his skills. Marcus receives his own lesson about ambition when he asks Luca, the chef he’s studying under, how he got so good. He came to see this as a good thing: “I could take that pressure off myself.

I have a friend who says her favorite way to read poetry is in quotation, as isolated lines in paragraphs of prose, such as in this column. You can’t have a personal, favorite part, the way I have a favorite part of “Prufrock” (which changes over time). Some of what’s in “Little Poems” does have a one-and-done feel. Short poems can be facile because they are short — they’re not wasting much of your time, so get over it. It’s unsatisfying in the way of all short unsatisfying poems; the end of any poem is a reward, but bad short poems satisfy too soon.

What’s Lost When Censors Tamper With Classic Films

This particular change to “The French Connection” came unexplained and unannounced, so we can only guess at the precise reasoning behind it. We see a bit of banter between two policemen working in what was then called the “inner city,” dialogue underlining their “good cop, bad cop” dynamic; in certain ways, it’s not so different from the set pieces you would find in Blaxploitation films of the era. He is one in a long line of characters that would stretch forward into shows like “The Shield” and “The Wire”: figures built on the idea that “good cop, bad cop” can describe not just an interrogation style or a buddy-film formula but also a single officer. The one newly smuggled into “The French Connection” reveals, to use a period term, the hand of the Man, even if it’s unclear from which direction it’s reaching. Censors, like overzealous cops, can be too aggressive, or too simplistic, in their attempts to neutralize perceived threats.

The scandal — a sudden and violent attack by a mystery man; accusations and denials; tabloid headlines — led to worldwide attention and, years later, a feature-length movie about Harding. But to Diallo, a 28-year-old French soccer player being led up a police station stairwell, the mention of her name — “Have you heard of Tonya Harding?” — produced only a blank stare. Now, in France, a generation later, the police suspected a similar motive in an attack on Kheira Hamraoui, Diallo’s teammate at the French club Paris St.-Germain. Prosecutors last September charged Diallo with aggravated assault in the attack on Hamraoui. Documents in the case and leaks to the French news media have accused Diallo of masterminding a premeditated attack.

Moss and Levene push back against his generalizations, accusations and abuse; Aaronow does not. The bullish Moss baits the hook and reels the weaker man in, planting the idea and prompting further inquiry. And then watch the way he registers that, merely by listening, he has become an accessory to the crime. Mamet’s hyper-stylized dialogue isn’t easy to act; if the rhythm is off, it can feel unbearably phony, “written” rather than spoken. The people he needs to win over are not liberal New York Times columnists, but voters who hate liberal New York Times columnists. Back then it was a voguish noun, borrowed from French, that described the unconscious structure of an ideology or a text. Soon, though, like so many other efforts to think critically, “the problematic” got left behind in this century’s great shift from reading to scrolling. These days we encounter “problematic” exclusively as an adjective: an offhand judgment of moral disapproval, from a speaker who can’t be bothered by precision. A whole cast of professional art workers — conservators, designers, guards, technicians — has been roped in to produce “It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby,” a small exhibition opening Friday at the Brooklyn Museum. Like the noun-turned-adjective “problematic,” this new exhibition backs away from close looking for the affirmative comforts of social-justice-themed pop culture.

A Bowlero executive publicly addressed the sprawling federal discrimination probe the company is facing for the first time Wednesday after it reported another quarter of what it called record-breaking growth. The question came about a week after CNBC revealed authorities want to settle the investigation for $60 million. Parker's comments mark the first time a Bowlero executive has publicly addressed the EEOC's probe, which has been ongoing since 2016. When CNBC reached out to Bowlero prior to publishing a report about the probe, the company refused to make its executives available for an interview. The case is now expected to go to court, where Bowlero could face even steeper fines, experts said previously.
This pattern does not apply only to research purporting to show evidence of a natural origin. Perhaps, if you staked a lot on that initial raccoon-dog report, it does make sense to turn your dial a bit in the opposite direction. Across a pandemic in which the public was desperate for new information, we have probably gotten too used to treating hurriedly prepared reports as definitive science. “It is really important to try to understand the origin of Covid-19,” Bloom says. I think part of science, and part of critical thinking in general, is supposed to be a high level of comfort with uncertainty and unknowns.
Built from weathering steel and glass, with a metal door finished in bright yellow automotive paint, the studio measures just under 300 square feet. It was designed by Tom Kundig, the architect who founded the Seattle-based firm Olson Kundig. “I just said, offhand, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if you could just take that office, that studio, and put it on tracks,’” recalled Mr. Kundig, describing the meeting where he listened to Mr. Maxon explain his desire for a home office that could provide isolation. “It was a joke.”But the more they batted the idea around, the more appealing it seemed — and the more daunting. “It’s a really simple idea, but requires all sorts of craziness to get there,” Mr. Kundig said.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren has made two calls to Vice President Kamala Harris, who hasn't returned them. Warren wanted to apologize for a comment that appeared to cast doubt on Harris' future as VP, per CNN. A source close to Harris told CNN that the incident was "pretty insulting." Warren, however, has not been able to speak with the vice president since, the outlet reported. Instead, Warren has only communicated with Harris' chief of staff, Lorraine Voles, who returned Warren's call in lieu of the vice president, CNN reported.
